Alfie Hernandez

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the sudden passing of Alfredo Hernandez, who left us on the evening of Thursday, June 12, 2025.

Alfie was born on July 10, 1954 in Rio Frio, Texas to Rejelio Valentine Hernandez and Enedina Jimenez. He had 12 other brothers and sisters. He and his family migrated from Texas to Wisconsin each year to farm fields where they finally settled in Hancock in 1963. Alfie attended Tri County High School where he lettered in football and wrestling and went on to graduate in 1973.

Alfie and his brothers worked at Kirk Tree Company in Wautoma (which was quite the crew!) until he moved on to Basic American Foods in Plover. He then went on to work at the Nekoosa Paper Mill where he happily retired in 2014.

Alfie had a daughter on November 25, 1982. She was the light of his life. Upon her death on October 17th, 1998 he poured himself into his faith and work. He was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Plainfield where he became a familiar face at services and events.

Alfie had a love for watching the ball games, watching Tri- County high school sports games, was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, and enjoyed playing golf with friends and family. He enjoyed being outdoors and walking the parks, he took great pride in his yard, and looked forward to working the Tri-County Thresheree each year with his nephew Lenny and Godson Jace. He was loved by many and left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He was always willing to lend a helping hand in any way he could. Little or big, he would pitch in for whatever was needed and would always show up.

Above all, Alfie cherished time spent with family. Whether it was sharing meals, celebrating milestones, watching his many nieces, nephews, and cousins playing a variety of sports, or simply enjoying each other’s company. He was always there to cheer you on and these were the moments that brought him the greatest joy. His love and devotion to family were at the heart of everything he did, and those memories will be treasured forever. He absolutely loved Tri-County and tried to attend as many events as he could. He was known to us as Al, Brother, Primo, Uncle Alfie, Papa Alfie, and The Godfather. He was a man that lived simply and loved generously. The way we all should.

Alfie is survived by his brothers, Sam (Helen) Hernandez, Arnie (Trina) Hernandez, Joe Hernandez, Roy Hernandez, Ruben Hernandez, and Gilbert Hernandez. His sisters Rosalinda Irwin and Minnie (Bob) Freitag. His numerous nieces and nephews, generations of cousins, great nieces and nephews, and so many other family members that brought him joy. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him. His legacy of kindness, encouragement, and unwavering love will live on in the hearts of many.

Alfie was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Angela, loyal companion Gizmo, sister Gloria Bovee, brothers, Arturo Hernandez, Eddie Hernandez, and Rodolfo “Pito” Hernandez, sister in law Diane Hernandez, brother in law Gerry Irwin, as well as his Tias and Tios and other close familia. He will be greeted by many when he arrives.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Sheriff's Department, first responders, and everyone who assisted on that night. Your actions, compassion, and support meant more than words can express. Our hearts are broken but we are thankful for the kind words, thoughts, and prayers from friends, neighbors, and the community.
