John J. Walter

John Joseph Walter, 90, died at home peacefully surrounded by loved ones on September 7, 2026.

He was born to Joseph and Margaret Walter on May 24, 1936. The baby of a family of nine, John is survived by a sister, Clara (Ray) Scharpf. He was preceded in death by sisters, Mary (Mike) Weyer, Margaret (Norbert) Krebs, Dorothy (Bob) Weyer, Anna (Jack) Wiczynski, Theresa (Jerry) Lenz, Eleanor (Lyle) Berge and his brother Franklin “Fritz” (Marie) Walter.

John was married to Kay (Berlowski) Walter for 68 years. They had four children. He is survived by daughters Christine Walter, Pamela (William) Schreiber, and Lisa (Doug Johnson) Walter. He was preceded in death by his son, Joe (Donna) Walter. He was also preceded in death by brother-in-law Robert Berlowski and sister-in-law, Janice Kenealy.

He was a loving grandfather and is also survived by four granddaughters, Betty Joe, Cody, Shannon and Tess along with three great grandchildren, Brinlee, Joseph James and Breyson.

John grew up on a farm near Loyal, WI and carried a hard working mindset his entire life. He moved to the southern part of Wisconsin for work where he met Kay Berlowski. They married in Hartford, WI on April 19, 1958 where they ended up raising their family.

John worked construction most of his life, mainly as a concrete mason. He was part of the initial construction of MacDonald’s Restaurants in the Greater Milwaukee area. If you bought a burger and fried at a Mickie D’s in Milwaukee, you most likely stood on concrete poured by John and his crew! He retired as an Assistant Superintendent from Kraemer Brothers Construction in Plain, WI.

He was happiest when he was puttering or working on some project. He could build or fix anything! He always joked that he carried a “roofers card” because it covers all! He made sure he taught all of his kids how to take care of the basics; oil changes, minor repairs, etc. They learned by holding the flashlight while he fixed and explained.

John and Kay bought Misty Pines Campground in Wautoma, which brought them to central WI. They ran the campground for approximately seven years. After that they stayed in the region. Since 2006, they have lived in a wonderful, small neighborhood in Almond, WI surrounded by great neighbors and dear friends who have always been willing and able to help with anything!

In 2025, John was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. He handled this illness with courage and grace.
