Gert Mrotzek Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gert (Papa) Mrotzek of Redgranite, WI on June 25, 2018.

Gert was born June 27, 1945 in a displaced person’s camp in Ausposin, East Prussia.  He spent his first 2 ½  years there with his mother, sister and grandfather.  Gert’s father, mother and older sister came to the U.S. in 1954 and relocated to Chilton where they lived and worked for one year to repay the “sponsor” for their passage from Germany to New York.  Eventually, the family moved to Randolph where Gert finally found his “home” and happiness for seven years. With his mother’s permission he enlisted in the Army at age 17.  Stationed in Germany for 1 year he decided to re-enlist to be able to go back.  He loved Germany! Instead he was relocated to Vietnam. After an honorable discharge in 1968 he was employed by John Deere; and ultimately achieved his “dream job” with Speed Queen in Ripon. He met Colleen (March 22, 1974) and as they say, “the honeymoon has continued ever since”. Gert lived a fun-filled life whenever he could.  He courageously lived everyday to his fullest in spite of many health issues.  He had a quick wit, a BIG Smile and was very loving and thoughtful to all.  He had integrity and was honest. That was a big part of his personality.

Papa took his “son” Angie on many rides which included various fishing expeditions.  He had a passion for boating and fishing which often included his three best buddies; Pat Flanagan, Gene and Don Passarelli. Other passions included golfing with Pat and shooting pool with any willing person.  He was GOOD! He also enjoyed bowling with his Speed Queen friends.

Gert is preceded in death by his parents, Heinz (1956), Ottilie (1982), sister Ursula (2017), and best friend Gene Passarelli; along with his “best in-laws ever” Merle and Midge Flanagan.

Papa is survived by his beloved wife, Colleen; daughter Angela (Ben) McCoy and granddaughter McKenzie (Pnuckle) of Withee, WI; nephew, Michael Kerin of Phoenix, AZ; sister and brothers-in-law, Michael (Tammy) Flanagan, Peggie (Jack) Churchill, and Pat (Diane) Flanagan; and many nieces and nephews. Chloe is the last of six “furkids” over a 44 year span.  He will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family.

We would like to thank Hometown Hospice of Fond du Lac for the wonderful team of angels (Amy, Jen, Kim, Chad and Fr. Kevin) who helped us through this difficult time in our lives.

Any memorials received will go to a student at Wautoma High School to further their education in electronics. Gert was a computer genius!

We thank the VA (Bill Rosenaw) for all the support they have given us on this roller coaster ride and journey through our wonderful years together.

Gert was cremated on June 27, 2018 his 73rd birthday. “For dust you are, and to dust you shall return”. (Genesis 3:19)

The worst is over now. We will be alright; My Sweet Prince. Sleep Well!

We Love You NOW & FOREVER, “Your Wiffie” & “Baby Girl”
